SAFARI TO THE PEARL OF AFRICA
The Great Apes & National Parks of Uganda and Rwanda
Winston Churchill once called Uganda the Pearl of Africa. Indeed this is true as Uganda is one of the most beautiful and diverse countries in Africa. It is a country dominated by great lakes, the birth of the Nile River, vast forests and savannas and the mist shrouded peaks of the Ruwenzori – the famed “Mountains of the Moon”. For the wildlife enthusiast Uganda is uniquely positioned between the faunal groups of East Africa and West Africa. It also sits on the boundary between dry Northern Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa. This geographical position produces a mixture of species from different regions and allows such a small country to have incredible biodiversity. We begin in the rolling hills of Lake Mburo National Park before dipping into Rwanda to trek Mountain Gorillas and Golden Monkeys. Once back in Uganda we will spend time in Queen Elizabeth National Park, home to unique species like Uganda Kob and Giant Forest Hog in addition to most of the quintessential mammals found in East Africa. Plying the Kazinga Channel by boat will give us spectacular views of Hippos, Nile Crocodiles, Elephants and a rich assemblage of waterbirds. From Queen Elizabeth we journey north to shadow of the Ruwenzoris and Kibale Forest National Park. Here we will trek Chimpanzees in the wild and witness the diversity of other primates and birds. Our safari concludes along the Nile River in Murchison Falls National Park. This park is a real mix of swamps, forests and grasslands which support a great array of wildlife. Jackson’s Hartebeest, Patas Monkey and the Rothschild’s subspecies of Northern Giraffe are some of the specialty species found in this park. Murchison is just as special for birders with Abyssinian Ground Hornbills, Piapiac and the fantastic, and highly sought after, Shoebill. Another bonus to our experience in Uganda is that it is still not very prominent on the safari circuits. This means that we will often feel like we are completely alone while in the national parks – quite a contrast to the maddening number of safari vehicles jostling for position in many East African parks. Uganda often feels like Africa from days long ago when the likes of Teddy Roosevelt and Hemingway set up grand excursions into the bush. EcoQuest Travel is proud to invite you to join us as we explore Uganda – the Pearl of Africa.
