BIRDS & WILDLIFE OF ARGENTINA
The Tropical Northeast: Iguazu Falls
Argentina is a vast country stretching over 2,500 miles from the tropical north to the wind-swept shores of Tierra del Fuego in the south. This span in latitudes leads to an incredible diversity of biomes including the high deserts and alpine slopes of the Andes to the west; the dry Chaco of the northwest; the expanses of Patagonia to the south and southeast; the great grasslands of the Pampas in the east; and wetlands and forests of the northeast. Our trip will concentrate on the wildlife-rich habitats of the northeast. EcoQuest Travel is proud to offer a once in a lifetime birding and wildlife adventure to Northeastern Argentina. We are traveling in November to take advantage of the beginning of summer before it gets too hot and when the water level in the marshes of Ibera is dropping. We begin in Buenos Aires with a visit to Costanera Sur – a fantastic urban refuge for a remarkable variety of birds. From Argentina’s capitol we will travel north to the Pampas. These grasslands, punctuated by thorny woodlands, are home to the famous cowboys of Argentina – the Gauchos. They are also home to flightless Greater Rheas and many specialized species of birds. From the Pampas we will continue north and east to the richest area of Argentina for birds and mammals. We begin our explorations of the northeast among the marshes of Ibera. Wildlife is abundant in Ibera with huge numbers of caiman and waterbirds, herds of Capybara, and small groups of Marsh Deer. South American Black Howler Monkeys shatter the dawn with their territorial roaring as giant Jabiru Storks hunt the swallows for fish. After our time in Ibera we will continue to the far northeast to a place of thunder! Where Argentina meets Brazil and Paraguay the thunder is created by the largest waterfalls in the world – Iguazu! These falls are spectacular as is the wildlife and birds found in the surrounding forests. Toco Toucans, Red-ruffed Fruitcrows, Black-fronted Piping-Guans, Blue Manakins and colorful hordes of hummingbirds, tanagers, and euphonias flit among the flowers and trees. We will concentrate our efforts on the birds of Argentina, but certainly will be looking for mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and butterflies as well. On behalf of EcoQuest Travel we proudly invite you to join us as we explore Argentina’s tropical north and seek its bountiful birds and wondrous wildlife.
